Certification Standards

Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (CADC/AODA)

Experience: Three years  (6,000 hours) of supervised work experience under a certified or licensed behavioral healthcare professional is the requirement for the Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC) credential. Supervised work experience is defined as paid or voluntary experience as a counselor who provides direct counseling services to AODA clients. An AODA client is a person with a diagnosis of alcohol and/or other drug abuse or dependency. Supervised work experience must be in the IC&RC/AODA performance domains of Assessment, Counseling, Case management, Client, Family and Community Education and Professional Responsibility. The ASACB allows an applicant to exchange 1,000 hours of the 6,000 hour requirement for an approved Associate degree in the Human Services or Behavioral Science field; 2,000 hours for an approved Bachelor degree and 4,000 hours for an approved advanced degree (Masters or above) provided they meet the supervision requirements. All experience must be documented as outlined in the ASACB Application and Standards manual.

Education: The education requirement for initial certification is a total of 270 clock hours including six clock hours in ethics. Education is defined as formal classroom education (workshops, seminars, institutes, in-services, and college/university work). Education must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the tasks within each IC&RC performance domain. All education hours must be pre-approved by the ASACB Education committee and must be documented by certificate or by official transcript.

Training/Supervised Practicum: A practicum is defined as a formal, systematic process that focuses on skill development and integration of knowledge. The 300-hour supervised practicum training must take place in a setting where AODA counseling is being provided. The practicum training hours must be directly supervised by a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) and must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform all of the IC&RC /AODA Twelve Core Functions with at least ten (10) hours in each core function. Direct supervision is defined as one-on-one supervision, group supervision or direct observation of skills within the core functions. The practicum training may occur as part of the eligible work experience and may be completed under the more than one supervisor or agency. All practicum training hours must be documented as outlined in the ASACB Application and Standards manual.

International Written Examination: All member certification boards must use the IC&RC Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) written examination in their certification process for new applicants.

Case Presentation Method: The Case Presentation Method (CPM) is a standardized process by which an applicant’s competence in the Twelve Core Functions is measured by peers through an oral examination.

Code of Ethics: The applicant must sign the ASACB code of ethics which is published in the Application and Standards manual.

Re-certification: 60 hours of approved continuing education must be earned within the two-year certification cycle. November 1, of odd numbered years is the current re-certification deadline for this credential.
